Samsung could be getting ready to introduce its first commercial rollable smartphone. According to a recent report from South Korean publication Maeil Business, the company is speeding up development of a device that can expand from a compact smartphone into a much larger display whenever users need more screen space.
The report claims the new device may launch during the first half of 2028, possibly alongside the Galaxy S28 series. It is expected to carry the name Galaxy Z Slide, although Samsung has not officially confirmed the branding. Rumors also suggest the phone could feature a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of around 440 PPI. A second rollable model is also reportedly planned for 2030.
Why Samsung Is Focusing on Rollable Phones
Samsung has been the leading name in foldable smartphones for years, but competition is growing quickly. According to market data from Omdia, Samsung’s share of the foldable display panel market dropped from 41.8% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 27% during the first quarter of 2026.
A rollable smartphone could help Samsung stand out again by introducing a new type of mobile device that goes beyond today’s foldable phones. If successful, it could strengthen the company’s position as a leader in display innovation.
Rollable Displays Are Much Harder to Build

Creating a reliable rollable display is far more challenging than building a foldable screen. The display must roll in and out smoothly hundreds or even thousands of times without developing waves, creases, or uneven areas.
To achieve this, every part of the mechanism—including the rollers, display layers, and internal support structure—must work together with extreme precision while remaining thin, lightweight, and durable enough for everyday use.

Samsung Has Been Testing This Technology for Years
Samsung has already shown several concepts that demonstrate its progress in rollable display technology.
During CES 2023, the company introduced the Flex Hybrid concept, which combined folding and sliding display technology. Later, at SID Display Week 2023, Samsung revealed the Rollable Flex prototype, which expanded from just 49mm to more than 254mm—over five times its original size.
These demonstrations showed that Samsung has been actively developing rollable displays long before bringing them to consumers.
Conclusion
Samsung’s reported rollable smartphone is still under development, so many details remain unconfirmed. However, recent reports suggest the company is moving closer to launching its first commercial rollable device in 2028.
If Samsung can deliver a durable design, premium experience, and reliable expandable display, the Galaxy Z Slide—or whatever its final name becomes—could represent the next major step in smartphone design.
